The PCA proposes a simplified structure to reduce confusion, clarify concepts and stabilize pricing. Currently, there are more than 400 toll rates, and the changes are intended to reduce that number significantly.

In the proposed changes, tolls will be set in a way that maintains their relative value over time as a way of reflecting the value offered by the Canal to its users.

To replace price bands, tariffs will be established according to the locks used for passage, as well as the kind and size of vessel.

This year, Panama’s authorities, seeking to raise revenues during a period when most shipping segments have seen better fortunes, are similar to those in Egypt, where the Suez Canal Authority has pushed through two toll hikes quite swiftly.
